and from the ashes

the phoenix shall rise again.

i'm back. only because its saturday and there's no one at home and im still in my midst of procrastination.

and to start things off, we have mr orwell (of the animal farm fame) in today with us.

here weeee go:

A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus:

  1. What am I trying to say?
  2. What words will express it?
  3. What image or idiom will make it clearer?
  4. Is this image fresh enough to have an effect?

And he will probably ask himself two more:

  1. Could I put it more shortly?
  2. Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?

One can often be in doubt about the effect of a word or a phrase, and one needs rules that one can rely on when instinct fails. I think the following rules will cover most cases:

  1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
  2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
  3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
  4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
  5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
  6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

closing time

when i first started this blog, it was supposed to be a time killer whilst doing my duties in the army. but one thing was certain; i had no intention of becoming another one of the faceless quadrillion blogs that writes as if the universe revolves around them. as cocky as i can be, there is still a tad too narcissistic for me. how one is able to chronicle his daily activities with intestinal fortitude (read xiaxue) is quite beyond me.
unfortunately, somewhere along the way, i seemed to have lost the plot and went down that path unwittingly. no longer is this blog about objective critique and flowing poems (not that anyone cares to read them anyway), it has become a mirror of my activities, almost like a checklist to make certain that i exist in this vastness of space.
so this is where i bid farewell and adieu.

all the worlds a stage, and all the men and women merely the actors. and actresses for you feminist lot.

p.s i will *however* be starting a *new* blog that will encompass excerpts of my love for the language, current affairs and critiques. feel free to drop. oh btw, while there will the new blog will not be password encrypted, there will however be an intrinsic iq prerequisite to enter. -big fat grin-

ok on drinking

1) if you're going to talk shit when your drunk/high, dont drink
2) if you're gonna get violent when your drunk/high, dont drink
3) if you're gonna start introducing weird girls to nai when you're drink/high, dont drink.
4) if you pass out when you drink (like me) but recover in 2 hours, sober enough to send everyone back, by all means drink
5) if you're gonna get pissed, bring a drinking buddy to make sure you are back home and not plastered to the floor.
6) too much pride results in frightening tirade of senseless intentions and meaningless actions
7) the code name for " shit nai i think im going to puke anytime soon " when you're in my car is " 警察 "
8) the code name for real police is " ma ta "

ok coldplay

the last time they were in singapore, i caught them together with travis with my buddy kervin. back then they only had 10 songs to play from their parachutes album and it was good.
this year 2006, a jolly band of 4 went. myself, sheng, wanxin and siti

i was trying to pysche myself up.

strangely enough, all of us were subdued leading up to the last 30 minutes of the concert. then once the lights went off, the adrenalein kicked in.

ok like i landscaped my camera half way but this was their opening. the lights went off then this huge countdown sequence started and they launched straight into square 1.

this is a clip of the scientist

we basically all sang our hearts out. well i did at least. half the videos taken on my phone were spoilt because of my singing. the concert was great, the crowd was very amped up and i think coldplay fed off our energy as well. the songs that did it for me was probably fix you, yellow and trouble. was hoping they would play shiver.

this is their complete set list for the twisted logic tour

Main set

1. "Square One"
2. "Politik"
3. "Yellow"
4. "Speed of Sound"
5. "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face"
6. "X&Y"
7. "How You See The World"
8. "White Shadows"
9. "The Scientist"
10. "'Til Kingdom Come"
11. "Ring of Fire" (acoustic) (Johnny Cash cover)
12. "Don't Panic"
13. "Clocks"
14. "Talk"

[edit]

Encore

1. "Swallowed In the Sea"
2. "In My Place"
3. "Fix You"

quotes of the night by chris
" its gonna be a good night, i can feel it in my bones "
" maybe it was worth rehearsing 143 times before playing here tonight "

he loved us and we loved him.

i quote

Nequaquam nobis divinitus esse paratam
Naturam rerum; tanta stat praedita culpa

Had God designed the world, it would not be
A world so frail and faulty as we see.
