moral courage in the face of adversity

now this is gonna be a little stale but i think still highly relevant to us in the context of the society that we live in. lemme just take you back a few months where there was this korean translator was was abducted in iraq and beheaded. there were riots and public outcry back in korea beseeching the government to relent in their stance to withdraw their troops and all. now imagine, what if one fine day a singaporean businessman or journalist were to be abducted and threatened to be beheaded if singapore didnt withdraw their forces from iraq? (yes we were involved in operation iraqi freedom) would there be concerned singapore citizens taking to the streats to protest? to have public forums fighting the case of the poor singaporean being held captive as opposed to being part of the "coalition of justice?" were thee be any movement at all?
when i saw the vandalism on the nkf buildings with regard to TT Durei and the whole fiasco, i was actually happy that hey there are actually people out here in singapore that have the balls to do such an act. steady man!
okok, maybe a singaporean being held captive in iraq is a little hard to fathom. how about something a little more realistic and common. the simple act of speaking up in class, giving up your seat to someone who needs it more, holding the lift for the next person and enquiring which level are they stopping at, asking a person puking outside mohd sultan if hes ok and if he needs a ride back. all these are simple acts of moral courage that anyone you and me can do but we are not doing.
maybe sometimes scared paiseh la, what if i ask stupid question then my whole class laugh at me. this is the mindset that needs to be changed in our young our middle age and our aged if we want singapore to have a more liberal education system that is truly the best in the world. we have to have kids adopting a daring, a questioning attitude towards things and not just accept it as their upperstudy has handed it down to them. people have got to be more spontaneous and outspoken in their thoughts but not in a stupid way e.g GET OUT OF THE COUNTRY U FCUKING CHING! but mannered and thoughtful. i think there is a lot of people in this country that more often than not feel stifled by our environment that we dare not speak our mind for fear of getting into trouble with authorities.
i dunno about the rest of you guys but im getting out of the country for a fresh of breathe air man.
